NewSage Press
About Us
Our Story
NewSage Press is an independent book publisher based in Oregon. We have been publishing nonfiction books since 1985, committed to quality in content and production. Our titles span a wide range of topics in a variety of voices, hoping to create greater understanding and tolerance for our differences and to build bridges to common ground. NewSage Press takes particular interest in women’s voices and stories that often are ignored.
Publisher and Founder, Maureen R. Michelson, decided to start her own press in 1985 after spending a decade as a journalist, reporting for Time magazine and its sister publications, including Fortune, People, and Sports Illustrated as a freelancer. She was also Editor of Glass Magazine and Glass Studio, and a stringer for The Washington Post in her early years after graduation with a degree in Journalism. Michelson also wrote feature articles for Ms. Magazine, Human Behavior, and Playgirl, among others. After ten years as a journalist, Michelson realized she wanted to work on projects that would, perhaps, outlive her. She also saw how many important voices and stories from every day people, especially women, were overlooked or ignored.
NewSage Press books have been reviewed in major publications, including The New York Times, Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Review, Library Journal, and many more. NewSage books have received awards and special recognition, including the American Library Association’s “Best Books for Young Adults” and the “Merial Human-Animal Bond Award.” In 2021, Maureen R. Michelson and NewSage Press’s book, One Woman, One Vote: Rediscovering the Woman Suffrage Movement, received the Soapstone Bread & Roses Award, sponsored by Oregon’s distinguished grassroots nonprofit, Soapstone. This award honors a woman whose work has sustained the writing community.
Several NewSage Press titles have been translated and published in numerous countries. Languages include Japanese, Italian, Simple Chinese, Arabic, Russian, Korean, German, and more.
Editorial Services
In addition to publishing books, NewSage Press also offers individual editorial services and consultations for authors preparing their manuscripts for publishing or who want to self-publish. Michelson also consults with writers interested in starting their own publishing companies. She brings more than 35 years of publishing and editing experience to the table. Michelson enjoys working with people who want to “get their story into the world” and helps them walk through the “mystery” of getting a book published. Michelson also works with NewSage Press’s book designer to prepare books for independent publication.
