This book is a co-publishing effort by NewSage
Press and the California Rural Legal Assistance that highlights
the positive changes that have taken place among the rural poor
in America. Organizing for Our Lives features six inspiring
stories of people engaged in grassroots efforts to build a new leadership
and overcome the cultural isolation and poverty that have traditionally
kept them separate and ineffective. Their stories include those
of East Indian and Mexican parents cooperating to improve their
childrens education; Asian refugees efforts to find
economic stability; a grass-roots Mexican-American womens
group and a farming community fighting a toxic waste incinerator
among others.
Richard Steven Street, a photographer and writer, has worked
extensively on California agricultural issues. His photos have been
nominated twice for a Pulitzer Prize.
Samuel Orozco is the news director for Radio Bilingue in
