Large-format book with extensive photographs

Millions of immigrants and refugees have passes through the gates of Los Angeles to begin their new lives in the United States. The result of this contemporary wave of Americans is akin to the great inpouring of Europeans in the 19th and 20th centuries--an infusion of energies and values that continue to change America forever. Yet little is understood or acknowledged about these newest Americans. This book offers a forum to hear their voices, and to understand with compassion the richness of diversity.

Ulli Steltzer has worked as a photographer for more than forty years. She has several photography books, and her photography is exhibited internationally.

Peter Marin is a novelist and poet who writes frequently about social and moral issues. He is a contributing editor of “Harper’s” magazine.
