Every woman is a daughter. Many women are mothers. The mother and daughter relationship is so primary yet so little understood. The photographs of mothers, daughters, grandmothers and great-grandmothers are accompanied by personal stories. The candid and honest writings reveal the intensities and subtleties, as well as the tension and the joy of this relationship. Although women’s lives are redefined and the mother-daughter relationship is always in flux, these portraits reveal the timelessness of this precious bond.

Raisa Fastman spent twelve years photographing mothers and daughters for this book as a way of exploring her relationship with her own mother. Born in Russia, Fastman spent a part of her childhood in Poland before coming to the United States. She now lives in Southern California where she works as a photographer. Her work has been exhibited internationally.
