So
begins Teresa Martino's book on her life with horses--a life rich
with adventurous and touching stories that speak to every animal
lover. For more than forty years Martino has lived and worked with
horses, hearing their stories and learning their lessons. In Horse
Nation she tells of the heroes and the fallen, the defiant and
the healers, the gentle pony and the angry stallion: Casey, the
blood bay, who jumped a teenage girl over her mother's sports car
in a rite of passage; Icy, a black mare, strong and independent,
who embodied the circle of life; and The Corinthian, a gray gelding,
defining what it means to be a champion. From classic dressage to
bone-breaking cross-country jumping, Martino writes lovingly and
humorously of the equine lifestyle. Martino writes also of the riders,
grooms, coaches, and students who have walked and breathed the equine
path like acolutes. Martino's poems and sketches further illuminate
this lyrical exploration of the unique relationship between horse
and human. When Martino was a child, her father once told her, "the
horses are blessed, chosen by God." She took her father's words
to heart and has built a remarkable life with horses.

Teresa tsimmu Martino lives on Vashon Island in
the Pacific Northwest where she writes, trains horses, and is the
director of Wolftown, a nonprofit organization founded by Martino
that is dedicated to wolf and horse rescue. Martino founded the
nonprofit organization, Wolftown, which is dedicated to horse and
wolf rescue. The horses are rescued from abusive homes and situations,
abandoned by previous owners, injured at the racetrack and ready
to be sold overseas as horsemeat, and sometimes from the wild. Wolftown
also works with young people, some facing their own personal crises,
to teach them compassion and empathy while caring for the animals.
Young people who volunteer at Wolftown witness, firsthand, how animals
respond to love and compassion, and they, too, learn to love and
be kind. Martino uses the balance and wisdom of the animals as well
to teach the kids, who are healing from their own emotional injuries.
